Home Depot Inc.

Home Depot was a company that I did relatively little research on, and relied more on instinct. This is a decision that I ended up regretting, as I sold it for less than the $1,000 I invested in it. I thought with the California wildfires at the time, Home Depot would prove to be a worthwhile investment. What I didn't predict was the impact that the poor housing market and low consumer confidence had on the home improvement industry. I also checked out the annual reports, P/E ratio, and other stats of HD, but didn't find anything alarming.

I also should have realized that the recent resignation of HD's marketing chief might detract from the value of the stock. Sure enough, shortly after I bought HD, a top analyst downgraded the stock because it deemed the recovery of the housing sector a long way off.
